Geoffrey Hinton
Pioneer of neural networks and deep learning, now one of the most prominent voices warning about the risks of advanced AI.
Geoffrey Hinton is a computer scientist whose work on backpropagation, Boltzmann machines and deep neural networks helped lay the foundations of modern AI. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto.
He shared the 2018 ACM A.M. Turing Award with Yoshua Bengio and Yann LeCun, and the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics with John Hopfield. In 2023 he left Google, saying he wanted to speak freely about the risks of AI.
Key ideas
- Advanced AI systems may come to exceed human intelligence, and this deserves serious attention now.
- Risks include misuse, labor disruption and loss of human control.
